Moving Averages Displaying Differently on Different Charts?
March 03, 2022 03:00PM
Maybe I'm losing my mind but it appears my 50 day simple moving average is displaying different values in Think or Swim on different timed charts.

In example the following is the 50 day moving average time for ZM on the following time frames (as of 2:58eastern)
1Day $155.34
1Hr $123.20
30m $123.63
20m $119.75
10m $117.50
8m $116.46
5m $114.77
3m $14.56

Again this is the 50 day simple moving average. Anyone else having this issue?

50 day and 50 period are only the same on the daily chart

Thanks. Would you say that the 200 and 50 day moving average are meaningless on charts smaller than the daily? (60,30,20,10,8,5,3)?

No. If you use the daily to trade you MUST buy out in time. Smaller charts are best for the weekly or in today out today options when using those moving averages. Places to look for a longer trend...Warren Buffet just bought a huge stake in OXY so oil companies are a bet on right now. Allow me to share this IF IF IF you trade on a daily chart find what small chart best goes along with you daily chart for an entry signal. As you know NOT ALL STOCKS move alike therefore a smaller chart if you trade daily will give you a better signal for when to buy. Line them up perhaps a 21 and 55 or a 34 and 55 chart for entry signals. Watch for a 20 moving average for support and/or resistance. Most market makers look at that moving average and then the news. Above the 20 usually means they will go for a call and below they will go for a put looking as they set their trades for support or resistance. That's where your smaller charts will assist you. If you can set your charts to 55,34,21 and 13 you WILL get a better entry signal. [www.investopedia.com]

Thanks for the info Darcy. I only trade intra day so I'll keep an eye specifically on the 20 moving average.

GW used to recommend the 21 min chart for plays off of the daily.

Also that 20ma is pretty strong. You could use a smaller moving average, but you'll get whipsawed a lot more. Getting whipsawed is pretty common in this market right now. Has been for a while now.

Traded OXY today off the 3,5,8 and cleared $322.50 in 7 minutes. It is a "brick". Right now, at 10:14 3/21/22 I am expecting a pullback using the 5, 8 and 13 possibly to $60. Then I'll take a look again. Watching my 20-moving average for the right signal.
