RTT Trend Trading practice thread.

Got a trigger on CLF. I'm going to give it a go... The spread isn't insane. I'm surprised at how low CLF is since the last time I looked at it. Oh well, going in. The V and PNRA plays are just hanging out. I may bail on V if it doesn't produce something interesting tomorrow. I've been in it long enough.

V - 1 x Sep 270C @ 18.55 = 1,855
Stop: 15.80
Limit: 23.00
Now: 18.60

PNRA - 2 x Aug 160C @ 9.50 = 1,900
Stop - 8.10
Limit: 12.00
Now: 9.60

CLF - 13 x Jul 7P @ 1.45 = 1,885
Stop: 1.25
Limit: 1.75

I had something odd happen to me this morning. I am not sure what to make of it.

My paper trading account with TOS sold my PNRA position at .95 after triggering my stop. The position is no where close to that price. I'm not sure how this happened. Should I believe this is a paper trading glitch, or has anyone ever had their stop trigger at .95 when the option is trading at 10.40? Should I open a ticket with TOS or is this just something that happens in paper trading???

Anyway, I don't want to open anything new. I am just updating current positions... Everything is in line if you don't count me filling out of PNRA at .95... Odd...

V - 1 x Sep 270C @ 18.55 = 1,855
Stop: 15.80
Limit: 23.00
Now: 18.90

PNRA - 2 x Aug 160C @ 9.50 = 1,900
Stop - 8.10
Limit: 12.00
Now: 10.45

CLF - 13 x Jul 7P @ 1.45 = 1,885
Stop: 1.25
Limit: 1.75
Now: 1.45

V continues to drift in my direction, so I'm going to hang on. CLF is not moving at all. PNRA is going my way, but I don't know what happened with that stop this morning. I am going to assume it was a glitch, and I'll probably open a ticket with TOS this afternoon.

Late again today. Snow days...

Got a trigger for HAS today, and I do like HAS at this time of year. I am going to swap in HAS for CLF since it's the only one that I have that's down.

V - 1 x Sep 270C @ 18.55 = 1,855
Stop: 15.80
Limit: 23.00
Now: 18.55

PNRA - 2 x Aug 160C @ 9.50 = 1,900
Stop - 8.10
Limit: 12.00
Now: 10.85

CLF - 13 x Jul 7P @ 1.45 = 1,885
Stop: 1.25
Limit: 1.75
Sold 2/26 @ 1.42 = 1846
-39

HAS 4 x Jul 60C @ 4.25 = 1,700
Stop: 3.60
Limit: 5.50

Account total: $11,281

EDIT: I forgot to update the prices on V and PNRA

Alright, I was in a car all day on Friday, so I wasn't able to update the positions. We got sold on our PNRA in the early market, so we'll be logging that win. The other positions were down on Friday, but no stops triggered. Today, we're up on those positions and I'm looking to add calls in CLF now (even though we just sold puts on CLF) because a trigger has fired on RTT for calls in a 4 week trend... So I'll be running the full update here. Also, it's worth noting that I did look at RTT for triggers on Friday, but none were present. Sorry I missed the update.

V - 1 x Sep 270C @ 18.55 = 1,855
Stop: 15.80
Limit: 23.00
Now: 20.05

PNRA - 2 x Aug 160C @ 9.50 = 1,900
Stop - 8.10
Limit: 12.00
SOLD 2/27 @12.00 = 2,400
+500

HAS 4 x Jul 60C @ 4.25 = 1,700
Stop: 3.60
Limit: 5.50
Now: 4.45

CLF 15 x Oct 7C @ 1.35 = 2,025
Stop: 1.15
Limit: 1.70

Orders are in. I'm not going to raise the stop on V just yet. Looking to do that tomorrow though.

I got a re-trigger on V calls today from the move yesterday. I should be paying more attention to the sell signals from RTT, just in case. The stops are working out really well, but I have been in this V position for quite a while.

CLF hit me hard yesterday, but it never stopped. It's rebounding today, so I'm sticking with it. I'm going to remain in all positions and just update today. I am going to move my stop up in V so that I don't become a loser in it. HAS is still up despite the stock coming back a little today.

So nothing to do today but update...

V - 1 x Sep 270C @ 18.55 = 1,855
Stop: 18.50
Limit: 23.00
Now: 19.70

HAS 4 x Jul 60C @ 4.25 = 1,700
Stop: 3.60
Limit: 5.50
Now: 4.60

CLF 15 x Oct 7C @ 1.35 = 2,025
Stop: 1.15
Limit: 1.70
Now: 1.30
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.

Interesting.

Today, I got a trigger on CLF to go down. Despite already being in it to go up. I find it odd that it could have conflicting RTT trends. I guess the deal is that it is down until 3/10, then it is up. I haven't seen that happen before, so I need to check that more closely. Regardless, it kicked me out at the stop today. V also kicked me out at the stop as well. HAS is still holding on. So today, I'm just logging a bunch of stops firing... I'm not going back into CLF to go down since the trend ends soon. I will get back into it going up if we get a trigger there.

V - 1 x Sep 270C @ 18.55 = 1,855
Stop: 18.50
Limit: 23.00
Sold 3/4 @ 18.45 = 1,845
-10

HAS 4 x Jul 60C @ 4.25 = 1,700
Stop: 3.60
Limit: 5.50
Now: 4.60

CLF 15 x Oct 7C @ 1.35 = 2,025
Stop: 1.15
Limit: 1.70
Sold 3/4 @ 1.15 = 1,725
-300

Not to give away anything for free... does RTT show long term/big chart trends for the stocks earnings/trends? Day trading and short term swing trading is hard to do. I would be curious if it is possible to trade these like BCT and Fireman 1984 do?
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
March 05, 2015 10:49AM
RTT breaks it into 1 week, 2 week, and 4 week trends. I tend to look for the longer trends. Thinking the longer the better. But you could limit to just 4 week trends.

I'm getting pounded in HAS today, and no other triggers have fired.. There aren't many trends on the list right now. I'm just hanging in on HAS since it hasn't reached the stop. Looking for another trigger.

HAS 4 x Jul 60C @ 4.25 = 1,700
Stop: 3.60
Limit: 5.50
Now: 3.90

Today's update is quick since there are no new triggers...
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
March 09, 2015 10:23AM
Short update today. Sorry for missing Friday, but the only thing that happened was that my stop fired on HAS.

HAS 4 x Jul 60C @ 4.25 = 1,700
Stop: 3.60
Limit: 5.50
Sold 3/6 @ 3.60 = 1,440
-260

There are no new triggers on RTT today either. The only thing I would discuss is that CLF fell off a cliff (pun), and I missed out on it because I didn't play the down. That would emphasize that I should just play the triggers no matter what. I was a little thrown because the triggers are both ways on CLF right now. That's pretty unusual, so I didn't know how to handle it.

Got a trigger today on AKAM, but the trend date is already over for it. I'm going to go ahead and pick it up according to my "buy whatever triggers" philosophy. Just looking to manage my way out of it if I need to.

AKAM 4 x Aug 67.50P @ 4.50 = 1,800
Stop: 3.80
Limit: 5.90
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
March 11, 2015 10:18AM
Well, TOS has done something odd where it won't fill my order, even if I put it in at market. So I am manually tracking this AKAM play.

Turns out, there is another trend for AKAM from 3/16 going up...

So I'm going to move my stop up on this to ensure I bail out quick. Less faith in the play if we're looking for an up move coming soon.

AKAM 4 x Aug 67.50P @ 4.50 = 1,800
Stop: 4.10
Limit: 5.90
Now: 4.35

No other triggers though...
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.

I think there is something going on with the Paper Money side right now.
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
March 12, 2015 10:31AM
Got stopped out of AKAM yesterday. So I'm pulling that one.. No triggers at all on RTT right now for the stocks I track. Surprised at the dead spot. But I'll give it some time.

AKAM 4 x Aug 67.50P @ 4.50 = 1,800
Stop: 4.10
Limit: 5.90
Sold 3/11 @ 4.10 = 1,640
-160

I am going to look at adding a few more stocks to my list...

I'm told by TOS tech support that there is a problem with the paper money side of things. It's been an issue since the weekend update. I'm told that it will be addressed over this weekend. Something about orders fills, or not filling correctly.
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
March 13, 2015 12:17PM
I just got the in-app notification about the issue with TOS. I did get some triggers today, but they are either too expensive (CMG) or they are really small trends (1-week).

Since I'm in nothing, I'm going to pass on today's triggers and see what next week brings...

Got a trigger today on LVS. Looks like a DIV is coming, but no other news. Going to open it up.

LVS 6 x Sep 55C @ 3.35 = 2,010
Stop: 2.85
Limit: 4.40
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.

My LVS is treading water. It's a little up today, so there's nothing to do here. I got a trigger on AAPL, so I'm picking that up.

LVS 6 x Sep 55C @ 3.35 = 2,010
Stop: 2.85
Limit: 4.40
Now: 3.35

AAPL 2 x Oct 130C @ 8.95 = 1,790
Stop: 7.60
Limit: 11.65

March 19, 2015 10:35AM
Filled out of my LVS limit this morning. AAPL is up and doing fine. Got a new trigger on CAT today, so I'm picking that up.

LVS 6 x Sep 55C @ 3.35 = 2,010
Stop: 2.85
Limit: 4.40
Sold: 3/19 @ 4.40 = 2,640

AAPL 2 x Oct 130C @ 8.95 = 1,790
Stop: 7.60
Limit: 11.65

I got a trigger today on WYNN, and I'm going to pass for two reasons. One, I'm already in two plays. Two, it's expiration Friday. I don't want to be holding 3 positions through expiration Friday... I'm just going to sit on what I have and keep a spot open for next week.

Both plays are doing ok. They opened up nicely this morning, but have given back today... They are still both up, so I'm doing nothing right now.

AAPL 2 x Oct 130C @ 8.95 = 1,790
Stop: 7.60
Limit: 11.65
Now: 9.10

CAT 4 x Aug 80C @ 4.35 = 1,740
Stop:3.70
Limit: 5.60
Now: 4.60

Full disclosure, I am a Gary student - Survivor and RTP.
When I saw your post about LVS, I had to bite my tongue. I, too, did LVS, but based on what Gary teaches, my entries and exit were quite different.

Here is the info on my trade:

On 3/13, bought the Sept 52.50 CALLS for $3.50
Today, 3/20, sold the Sept 52.50 CALLS for $6.65

Yet another trade showing that Gary's discipline and teaching works.
Chunky money, indeed!

GREAT! move on LVS. What was the entry signal?
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
March 23, 2015 10:01AM
Glad to see you hit on LVS. I'm guessing a FP on the 4hr is what put you in...

Personally, I always like to hear about how people handled their losing trades. But I'm glad you made some money.

Again, this thread is supposed to be acting on the idea of SOLELY using RTT. So my entry is as simple as seeing which ones showed up today.

Speaking of which... I got a trigger today on NFLX, but I can't afford that with my 2k trade size, so I'm going to have to let it pass by. I see that CAT hit as high as 5.20 today (my sell is at 5.60). I would liked to have taken that, but oh well.

Given what we're seeing, I'm just going to move my stop on CAT up a little. AAPL is against me, but it's not significantly.

AAPL 2 x Oct 130C @ 8.95 = 1,790
Stop: 7.60
Limit: 11.65
Now: 8.70

CAT 4 x Aug 80C @ 4.35 = 1,740
Stop:4.50
Limit: 5.60
Now: 4.90

Moving CAT up to secure it doesn't burn me... But not doing anything else today...
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
March 24, 2015 10:47AM
Ahh, well. CAT kicked me out this morning on the dip. Sold me at 4.40, on the gap.

I'd like to point out that the CAT trade probably could have been much more of a profit had I been a little more precise in what I wanted out of it. These days, I have been sort of blanket setting 30% up and leaving it alone, but I picked up CAT on a dip, and I could have set my profits to pull out once it hit back to the previous high. I think this is the kind of thinking that comes with more experience (10 years trading), but for now, I'm fine with ensuring that I didn't get burned and moving on to the next trade. I have said before that I need to focus a little more on the exits, and I will practice that more as I progress...

It's worth noting that implementation of that last point would require more data than what is solely provided by RTT. And as other members have noted, they use RTT to supplement their existing tools. However, I'm still up 16% YTD, so I may just continue on this path. Only adding a little data provided by the RTT provided charts...

That being said, I may simply continue as I have been running... I like the idea of moving my stops up as I see profits. Maybe I'll stick with that.

So we're out of CAT, I got a trigger today for WMT. I'll be adding that one today.

AAPL 2 x Oct 130C @ 8.95 = 1,790
Stop: 7.60
Limit: 11.65
Now: 8.85

CAT 4 x Aug 80C @ 4.35 = 1,740
Stop:4.50
Limit: 5.60
Sold 3/24 @ 4.40 = 1,760
+20

WMT 5 x Sep 82.50 @3.70 = 1,850
Stop: 3.15
Limit: 4.75

Account total: $11,701

PS I know I kind of went around my nose in this post, but I wanted to illustrate the thinking for those following along...
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
March 25, 2015 10:07AM
Well, WMT punched me in the face real quick. I'm out already today at my stop of 3.15 this morning. AAPL still manages to hang in there.

I got another trigger on CLF today. I'm a little nervous about it because of how fast it moves these days. I saw it make an 8% move the other day.

I am going to pick it up, but I'm going to buy more time than I normally would, because of the swings.

AAPL 2 x Oct 130C @ 8.95 = 1,790
Stop: 7.60
Limit: 11.65
Now: 8.05

WMT 5 x Sep 82.50 @3.70 = 1,850
Stop: 3.15
Limit: 4.75
Sold 3/25 @3.15 = 1,575
-275

CLF 14 x Jan'16 5C @ 1.35 = 1,890
Stop: 1.15
Limit: 1.75

Account Total: $11,426
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
March 26, 2015 10:36AM
Wow.

Two more big whiffs... CLF went my way right after I bought it, and then aggressively sold off back down to my stop. AAPL sold yesterday towards the afternoon also.

I'm not dying, but I'm not happy either.. I have to find a way to improve on it, so I have a couple of thoughts. First, I have not been aggressively selling on an RTT sell signal. AAPL was showing a sell signal in RTT before it really tanked, and I could have preserved that capital if I would have gone ahead and sold it instead of waiting for it to stop. Second, I'd like to be more aggressive with moving my stop up. I could have had a lot more profit in CAT, and I could have taken profit out of CLF if I was more aggressive about moving stops. As such, I'm going to move up stops whenever I see profits. Now, that doesn't mean I'm going to be eyeballing the chart all day, but if I check on a position and it's up, I'm not going to sit and wait until the next day to move my stop. I am going to try to make sure I post here if I move a stop though. I feel like it's needed for real time updates. Otherwise, I could be going back and saying, "Oh yeah, I did that..."

So the adjustments are simply being more aggressive about closing when RTT has a sell signal, no matter what the position is doing (this also makes sense because if RTT has a sell signal today, a move in my direction would produce a 'rebuy' signal). And being a little more aggressive with moving stops on profit.

There are no new triggers today, so I'm just accounting the two losses and waiting for tomorrow:

AAPL 2 x Oct 130C @ 8.95 = 1,790
Stop: 7.60
Limit: 11.65
Sold 3/25 @ 7.60 = 1,520
-270

CLF 14 x Jan'16 5C @ 1.35 = 1,890
Stop: 1.15
Limit: 1.75
Sold 3/26 @ 1.15 = 1,610
-280

Would it be safe to say that after 6 months with this approach you have a gain of $876.00?

It's hard to say that specifically, because the approach has been adjusted over the months. When I started, I wasn't running stops, so there were several 40% losses.

But at the end of the day, yes. You can say that after 6 months, I'm at approximately 8% profit. I'm expecting to be able to get that number a lot higher through adjustments, but 6 months and still running a profit is not bad for such a basic system... Certainly RTT is paying for itself...
