Great call on RKT on 10/15. Divergences plus a major reversal on the Daily (bullish engulfing) was a nice set up, especially if you used a double espresso entry smiling smiley

My POT position is now up 9%. Happy about that. I was surprised to see the market fall as much as it did Friday. I guess the market has more bearishness than I do... Oh well, I still think puts in the fall winter are snipers, and I'm glad to have gotten 25%+ out of two of them.

I got a trigger on ADBE calls today. Going to go into it today. Not going to do anything about POT. It did produce another SELL signal on Friday though... Hmm... I am getting really itchy to dump POT with profit. I'll look at it tomorrow. The buy/sell signal is crossing back and forth daily, it seems.. Might be time to bail.

POT - 10 x Jun '15 35C @ 2.05 = 2,050
Now: 2.25

ADBE - 3 x Jul '15 75C @ 6.10 = 1,830

I have also been considering a 50% up rule. Just putting in a sell order for every position at 50% up. I have had quite a few go beyond 50% while I am not looking. Had I taken all of them, I would be doing even better than I am today. That rule might replace my "fall/winter" rule. That also allows it to be the same year round... Shrug... Will stick with what I have for now...

Are you using the weekly, two week, or 4 week signals. Do you see a signal for ADSK calls on the weekly starting on the 13th?
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
December 15, 2014 12:53PM
I am using whatever pops up in RTT. I look at the Dashboard and I pick whatever has produced a signal on the dashboard. I tend to stay away from trends that are ending within the next few days, but I haven't had too many of those. At this point though, I'm using whatever signal pops up.

ADSK is not one of the stocks I have enabled on RTT, so I wouldn't see that one. I only have about 27 selected...

POT continues to linger. I'm up 10% in it now, so I'm going to sit tight a little longer. ADBE dropped on me, and it's sitting down 9% right now. But I'm not going to do anything with it just yet. The numbers are still in tact. One more day to perform.

I did get a trigger on YHOO today, so I'm adding that position now.

POT - 10 x Jun '15 35C @ 2.05 = 2,050
Now: 2.29

ADBE - 3 x Jul '15 75C @ 6.10 = 1,830
Now: 5.60

YHOO - 4 x Jul '15 50C @ 5.25 = 2,100

Interesting day.

I have two positions that are inside of the "sell signal" status from RTT, but both of those positions are up right now. That would be YHOO and POT... YHOO produced a sell status yesterday, but I'm up 1% on the trade right now. POT is up 10% although the sell status triggered on it a few days ago. I see new POT trends filtering onto the list of upcoming, so I'm going to hold both of these since they're up. The one that worries me much more is ADBE, which is down 11% today.

If I have to close it down more than 15% tomorrow, then so be it. The trade is within limits, and the sell trigger has not produced on RTT, so I'm going to keep it another day. There are no new triggers...

POT - 10 x Jun '15 35C @ 2.05 = 2,050
Now: 2.31

ADBE - 3 x Jul '15 75C @ 6.10 = 1,830
Now: 5.50

YHOO - 4 x Jul '15 50C @ 5.25 = 2,100
Now: 5.40

I got a trigger on DE today... And honestly, I really want to replace POT with DE. POT is now up 5% after being up as much as 20% yesterday. The wildness is starting to bug me a little. However, the position continues to be UP for me, so I'm hesitant to do anything with it at all. The sell signal did trigger on RTT quite a few days ago, and it still hasn't triggered a buy signal yet. That makes me want to take the profit out of it and look for the next entry. And that is what I will do.

As far as the other two positions, they are performing nicely. YHOO up 9% now and ADBE up 4%. The Santa Fed rewarded the good little boys and girls, so I am holding these two for a bit longer.

I'm mostly dumping POT because it keeps yo-yo'ing on me, and I'm just done with it. I kept it beyond the sell signal anyway. Time to let it go.

So I'll be pulling POT and adding DE today.

POT - 10 x Jun '15 35C @ 2.05 = 2,050
Sold 12/18 @2.15 = 2,150

ADBE - 3 x Jul '15 75C @ 6.10 = 1,830
Now: 6.45

YHOO - 4 x Jul '15 50C @ 5.25 = 2,100
Now: 5.90

DE - 4 x Jun '15 90C @4.70 = 1,880

Account total: $12,000

Lots of new triggers on RTT today. I'm not thrilled about ADBE, and I kind of want to cut it and replace it with something else. However, it is sitting idle. Doing nothing... So I will stick with it. That means I'm not doing anything today. Just updates.

ADBE - 3 x Jul '15 75C @ 6.10 = 1,830
Now: 6.20

YHOO - 4 x Jul '15 50C @ 5.25 = 2,100
Now: 6.00

DE - 4 x Jun '15 90C @4.70 = 1,880
Now: 5.00

Have a nice weekend.

Driving all day today.

I checked on positions. Not going to do anything about them.
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
December 23, 2014 11:51AM
Hard to keep updating while on vacation...

Probably, I will just update the prices until something is worth selling. Looking for Santa to come to town.

ADBE - 3 x Jul '15 75C @ 6.10 = 1,830
Now: 5.95

YHOO - 4 x Jul '15 50C @ 5.25 = 2,100
Now: 5.55

DE - 4 x Jun '15 90C @4.70 = 1,880
Now: 5.05

Nothing is out of bounds, so I'll just stick with them.
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
December 24, 2014 11:48AM
Update today is quick. No new RTT triggers. Still in my positions. YHOO bounced back today. Nothing to do yet.

ADBE - 3 x Jul '15 75C @ 6.10 = 1,830
Now: 5.90

YHOO - 4 x Jul '15 50C @ 5.25 = 2,100
Now: 5.80

DE - 4 x Jun '15 90C @4.70 = 1,880
Now: 4.70

Surprised that none of them are really doing anything at all.
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
December 26, 2014 11:32AM
Wow, almost no movement. I was hoping for something... Nothing is out of bounds, and nothing is moving. So I'll keep my update short.

ADBE - 3 x Jul '15 75C @ 6.10 = 1,830
Now: 6.00

YHOO - 4 x Jul '15 50C @ 5.25 = 2,100
Now: 5.70

DE - 4 x Jun '15 90C @4.70 = 1,880
Now: 4.60

No new triggers on RTT either. Quiet for the holidays I guess. Happy Xmas!
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
December 29, 2014 11:52AM
No new triggers still. Surprisingly quiet, but I guess that's good for this time of year. My positions continue to do nothing. I may start to scale out of positions based on age... As it stands, nothing is happening and nothing is out of bounds...

ADBE - 3 x Jul '15 75C @ 6.10 = 1,830
Now: 5.70

YHOO - 4 x Jul '15 50C @ 5.25 = 2,100
Now: 5.65

DE - 4 x Jun '15 90C @4.70 = 1,880
Now: 4.95

Keeping the updates short while on vacation.

I am in the car today, but I had to close this on the road. Not sure how I will handle this kind of thing in the future. ADBE closed for 4.70. Full update later.
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 02, 2015 11:42AM
Ok, I've learned quite a lesson over the holidays.

I have GOT to use mechanical stops over the holidays. I am not paying nearly enough attention, and positions are running away from me while I'm away. I have been set back quite a bit. I have a lot of ground to make up in 2015.

I'm recording my losses and looking to make some gains back..

ADBE - 3 x Jul '15 75C @ 6.10 = 1,830
Sold 12/30 @4.70 = 1,410
-420

YHOO - 4 x Jul '15 50C @ 5.25 = 2,100
Sold 1/2/2015 @ 5.00 = 2,000
-100

DE - 4 x Jun '15 90C @4.70 = 1,880
Sold 1/2/2015 @ 3.60 = 1,440
-440

Account total: $11,040

Wow, what a set back... I really have to make sure that doesn't happen again.

I did get some RTT triggers. I'm going to go ahead and open a put on DECK. The other trigger was on GOOGL, but I can't afford it yet..

DECK - 2 x Jun '15 90P @ 8.70 = 1,740
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 05, 2015 11:10AM
I did some analysis regarding my set back over the holidays, and one of the things I was not even looking at was the sell signal in RTT. I am kicking myself, but for some reason, I just figured things would work out, whether I was looking at it seriously or not. This was a big mistake. I could have saved myself quite a bit of set back if I just would have sold on sell signals instead of paying so little attention. It's not like we're talking about a ton of time here. I could have set aside 30m every day to really look at it. It would have been tough when I was driving on the road, but I have to be able to anticipate this. Anyway, lesson learned is there is no "time off" from paying attention. Have to at least look at it with a critical eye 30m every trading day.

The option of mechanical stops is still there as well. That could be what to do on days when I am on the road.

Back to the grind. Triggers today on CRUS to go up and YHOO to go down. I am going with YHOO and holding one more slot open for another trade. DECK is doing just fine with nothing to do about it yet. Looking good.

DECK - 2 x Jun '15 90P @ 8.70 = 1,740
Now: 9.30

YHOO - 4 x Jul '15 49P @ 4.70 = 1,880
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 06, 2015 11:20AM
No new triggers today, and existing positions are confirmed to be in line. Nothing to do today but update the post...

I am thinking about adding a target price based on recent support, resistance and other factors. At that point, I would be putting in stops on profit if not just taking them.

In fact, I'm going to take DECK today as we hit the daily EMA200. Throw another brick on the pile.

DECK - 2 x Jun '15 90P @ 8.70 = 1,740
Sold 1/6/15 @9.65 = $1,930

YHOO - 4 x Jul '15 49P @ 4.70 = 1,880
Now: 4.85

Account total: $11,230
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 06, 2015 11:21AM
Hmm, I told myself I wouldn't use charts outside of RTT when I started this. I will have to think about it some more. I think everyone believes you have to use external charts as well, but maybe I can keep it to a minimum... We'll see how it works out.
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 07, 2015 11:36AM
DECK took off today, so my sell yesterday seems like a really good move. I'm going to stick with setting targets for the trades from here on out. Whatever I set as a target for the trade won't matter... I'll just set a target and try to hit it.

That being the case, I'm going to go ahead and close YHOO today also. The reason is because of the daily 50 sitting at around 48.50 as well as several previous times where that price range acted as support. So I'll go ahead and throw this brick on the pile as well. Unfortunately, there are no new triggers on RTT, so there is nothing else to do today.

YHOO - 4 x Jul '15 49P @ 4.70 = 1,880
Sold 1/7/15 @ 5.10 = 2,040
+160

Account total: $11,390

I am taking this profit because a lot of stocks seem to be hitting support levels and then blasting the other way. That's what DECK did yesterday as well as BIDU and a few others I track. Also, earnings season is approaching, and even DECK is inside of an earning uptrend right now. So I'd like to see some triggers going up here soon.
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 08, 2015 11:13AM
Well, the YHOO move looks justified.

However, no triggers coming through on RTT today at all. Means I have nothing to do. More bullish trends on the horizon, so I'm sitting back to see those come though.

funkho,

this is a terrific thread.

since you are not using charts, how do you determine entry? Most of your posts are around 11-12 every morning, so i assume you are trading before then.

do you ever make any late day trades, between 3-4pm.

thanks

Wall,

I am trying to spend very little time paying attention to the market. I'm looking at it around 11AM every day, but only for about 30m on that day. I tried to tailor the positions so that I don't have to baby sit them at all. I just come back at 11AM the next day and see what's going on. Outside of that, I'm trying to do as little as possible.

As far as entry, I am using RTT's "recent technical entries" page off the dash board. If something is on there, I am buying it. Simple as that. I don't do any decision making unless there are multiple signals. I'm trying to keep my decision making out of the process except for the exits. Even then, I'm trying to minimize how much my brain gets in the way.

I got triggers on 4 stocks today, but since I'm most familiar with DECK, I'm going to go with that one. I'm not going to open more than one trade a day, but I do like the look of V as well.

Actually, after I looked at the options, I have decided to go with V instead of DECK. The reason is simply because of the spread.

V - 1 x Jun '15 250C @ 21.25 = 2,150

I am moving a little deeper ITM in order to get my trade size right. Hmmm, V doesn't have as far to move up as DECK does. That makes me want to play them both. I'll be looking for V to move up to the 270 area. I'll re-assess the position if we get there.
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 12, 2015 11:23AM
My V option is up just a tad. Nothing to do with it.

A couple more triggers on RTT today, so I'm going into Wynn.

V - 1 x Jun '15 250C @ 21.25 = 2,150
Now: 21.80

WYNN - 2 x Jun '15 150C @10.75 = 2,150
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 13, 2015 10:52AM
Big day for my positions. WYNN advancing way more than I expected. I had a target area of 155 for WYNN, and it made it up to 152 today. Because it went so fast, I'm tempted to take the profit out of it now. If it backs off, I'll just take profits, but I'd like to see it hit the 155 area.

V also made a nice move up. I'm looking for the 268 area for V. I'd like to see it move just a little more also.

I have no new triggers today either. So I'm not going to do anything today.

V - 1 x Jun '15 250C @ 21.25 = 2,150
Now: 24.20

WYNN - 2 x Jun '15 150C @10.75 = 2,150
Now: 13.10

I could take profits right now and erase my Holiday Horrible Trades... That's good news. Because WYNN is so close, I'm going to go ahead and put in a sell order for 14.50.

I suppose I should always have a sell order in just in case. I put a pie in the sky order in on V also.
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 14, 2015 11:23AM
Wow... What a reversal.

I think I am going to add in a new condition, which is that if I get 25% gain inside of one day, I'm going to go ahead and take that. Just be prepared for the next one. Interestingly enough, if I would have closed my calls yesterday, I would be perfectly positioned to get into the large amount of puts that have triggered in RTT today.

Oh well.. I will be closing my positions at losses instead of gains. In addition, I'm adding V as a put after closing the call today. It triggered on RTT yesterday.

V - 1 x Jun '15 250C @ 21.25 = 2,150
Sold 1/14/15 @ 18.35 = 1,835
-315

WYNN - 2 x Jun '15 150C @10.75 = 2,150
Sold 1/14/15 @ 10.40 = 2,080
-70

Purchase:
V - 1 x Jun 265P @ 20.45 = 2,045

Account total: $11,005

Sad to be set back, but I read somewhere how someone said that as soon as you start projecting your gains, you should take your profits, because it's probably not going where you think it is. That is true today, for sure. I had those sell orders in like I was going to the moon. I should have just taken what the market was giving yesterday.
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 15, 2015 10:57AM
I'm not exactly sure why I sold WYNN yesterday seeing as how it wasn't really down. Also, there was no sell signal on RTT. Oh well, I will miss it I guess. I am adding CHK calls today as that came up as a trigger. I would point out that I am preferring EARNINGS trends to other trends when I am selecting trades on days where multiples show up. After that, I step down from 4-week to 1-week. The only thing that changes my mind is if the spreads are favorable.

V put is an earnings trend. Up 5% after yesterday. I'm going to stick with it. CHK is a 2 week trend...

V - 1 x Jun 265P @ 20.45 = 2,045
Now: 21.75

CHK - 9 x Jul 19C @ 2.30 = 2,070
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 16, 2015 11:00AM
First, checking in on existing trades.

Looking over V, we're up in the option again today. The stock has moved down to what I consider support at the 250 area, so I want to put in a stop to secure a profit. I'm up about 11% in it right now. So I'm going to put a mechanical stop in up about 5%. Putting it in at 21.55.

CHK is doing well also. It is also at a resistance spot, but I really expect it to break through and move up to the 20 area. I am putting in a stop on this also. It's currently up 8%, and I will put in a stop up 4% or so. Putting it in at 2.38. I'm tired of getting profits and then having to close losses. I'll take 3% if the market gives it to me.

I got a trigger from Jan 14th on DE, option spread isn't too bad, so I'm going to go with it. 4-week trend.

V - 1 x Jun 265P @ 20.45 = 2,045
Now: 22.35

CHK - 9 x Jul 19C @ 2.30 = 2,070
Now: 2.51

DE - 6 x Jun 90C @ 3.20 = 1,920
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 20, 2015 11:08AM
Got a trigger today on NFLX, but it's too expensive for me to play in my trade size. Going to have to let it go by.

Stop filled on V Friday. I'm down in DE now, and I put in a stop today to get rid of it if it continues to fall. The trend I was buying on RTT was just about over. I missed that when I reviewed it. I need to make sure I pay closer attention to how long the trend is set to last. I have a stop in to kill the trade if it goes against me any more. I'm still bullish overall.

My CHK position is up. I have a target area of 20 for it. I have a stop in place though, just in case it dives on me.

Updates:

V - 1 x Jun 265P @ 20.45 = 2,045
Sold 1/16 @ 21.20 = 2,120
+$75

CHK - 9 x Jul 19C @ 2.30 = 2,070
Now: 2.52

DE - 6 x Jun 90C @ 3.20 = 1,920
Now: 2.91

Account total: $11,080
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 21, 2015 10:56AM
I got tripped out of DE yesterday. I am starting to bias against DE. It seems to burn me every time. Although, I should have looked more closely at the trend duration. Oh well. CHK is bringing it back by pushing hard towards 20. I'm going to raise my stop on it to 10% up at we're sitting on 20% profit right now.

Since there are no new triggers, I am reviewing the ones that are already in play, and I've decided to give MA a go based on the earnings trend and the recent (within the last year) split.

Recording the DE loss, adding MA, and raising stop on CHK...

CHK - 9 x Jul 19C @ 2.30 = 2,070
Now: 2.78 Stop: 2.55

DE - 6 x Jun 90C @ 3.20 = 1,920
Sold 1/20 @ 2.80 = 1,680
-240

MA - 4 x Jul 85C @ 5.40 = 2,160

Account total: $10,840
Re: RTT Trend Trading practice thread.
January 22, 2015 11:20AM
I am very disappointed in CHK. I see that it peaked at 20.05 before it fell HARD today. I ended up getting tripped out on my stop from yesterday. I made a profit, but I should have put a sell order in close to the 20 mark for CHK. I have been toying with OCO orders, which are a limit sell on the top side as well as a stop on the low side. I am going to start using those more often.

I also got the trigger on V for entry. Even though I'm already in MA, I'm going to go ahead and pick it up. MA is down today, but only about 5%. Will give it another day.

CHK - 9 x Jul 19C @ 2.30 = 2,070
Sold 1/22 2.52 = 2,268
+198

MA - 4 x Jul 85C @ 5.40 = 2,160
Now: 5.15

V - 1 x Jun 250C @ 18.60 = 1,860

Account total: $11,038
